Shango
6/15/1993 - 6/28/2006
Todd and I adopted Shango from the Sacramento SPCA when he was 12 weeks old. We fell in love with him when he brought the tennis ball back over and over and over again. He was the first puppy I ever had.

Shango was an Aussie/Golden mix, and the best dog ever. He was eager to please, quick to learn, and a very active dog. He loved to play frisbee, go for long hikes, and, as a senior dog, do agility.

He was a certified therapy dog for years with Lend A Heart Animal-Assisted Therapy and he was the reason I got to carry the Olympic Torch for the Winter 2002 Games.

Unfortunately, Shango was a product of poor breeding and suffered from hip dysplasia, two cruciate ruptures, a lumbar sacral deformity, DM, and more. But, through his attitude, drive, and determination, you never would have known it - he never had a bad day in his life.

Shango (named after a central African god of protection) is my gold standard for all dogs in the future. I will look for dogs that have his heart, protectiveness, drive, and temperment, but who are healthy. If I find such a dog, that is the dog I would look to to start my breeding program.

Shango's been gone a year and a half now...and there isn't a day that goes by that we don't think about him. I still miss him terribly...and I know that the day will come when we will be reunited. Until then, run and play my sweet boy, I love you.
