KATIE'S PHOTO GALLERY (Coming Soon)
Well, we're still not 100% sure how it happened, but after 22 years, Todd and I are expecting our first child. A girl we're naming after my mom (Katherine) and Todd's mom (Joyce). Katie's name will mean "pure joy". We hope that the pure joy we feel now will be shared by Katie when she joins our family.
Todd and I met in high school 22 years ago. He immediately made an impression on me, I was a freshman, he a senior. Toward the end of the year, we went on a band trip together and we ended up sitting together on the tour bus. When we discussed our dogs, we both realized this was a relationship in the making!

We married in 1997 after 10 years together, and tried to have kids. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be, and after suffering a miscarriage, we decided that we'd forego being parents, and substituted our dogs into the "furry kids" role. I think our parents were both disappointed, but, they never really did give up the being grandparents (to human kids) dream.

In October, I ended up getting pretty sick and had to stay in the hospital for a week and had gallbladder surgery. I also lost a large amount of weight in a fairly short period of time (100 pounds in 4 months). I think these shocks to my system overrode my PCOS and in January, I was pregnant. It was confirmed in March, when we found out I was 9 weeks along!

Even Tick is in on the Ladybug theme!

In April, my sister also got the opportunity to adopt a little boy. Jeremiah was born in March and will be 7 months older than Katie. Since Katie is likely to be an only child, it'll be nice to have a cousin so close in age.

It's June and I'm 22 weeks along. More than half way through, and I realize how much we have left to do before we can really welcome Katie. But, we'll be spending the summer getting ready, and I hope we'll make it before she does!

I'll post pictures of the ultrasound and pictures of me as I start to show. We'll also post pictures of the nursery as we progress from changing it from Todd's office to a ladybug haven!

Please check back often to see how the pregnancy is going and what we're thinking about becoming first time parents (at 40 and 37!).

The July update brings us to 26 weeks. I can't believe I'm about to start my third trimester! Katie moves around a lot and she seems to like to move the most in the middle of the night - oh-oh...signs of things to come?

We had a little scare at the end of June, some lower back pain and fluid leaking. I had to go to labor and delivery, but everything checked out ok. The nurses and doctor were surprised at how active Katie was! Since then, everything seems to be progressing normally, and our next appointment is July 22.

Todd's still working on clearing out his office, but we've bought the paint for the nursery (a butter yellow and sage green - comes from her ladybug bedding). Friends of ours have given us a recliner that is a darker sage green for in her nursery - that ought to keep the long nights a little more comfortable - thanks Sue and Mickey!

Todd and I had fun registering, but, I tell you, I had NO IDEA of all the stuff they make for babies! Babies'R Us is overwhelming! It's really not like bringing home a new puppy (which we already have everything for!). I think we might be getting glimpes that this kid thing is going to be different than the dog thing! Oh-oh.

Crazy how fast time flies. August was our first baby showers. The first was hosted at WAG and organized by Patti and Candy - fantastic! Katie was soooo spoiled, it was nice to see all the love and support she is receiving from our dogs friends - dog folks really are the best!

We also had a wonderful shower at Todd's office - it was fun. After meeting all of his co-workers, I can see why he likes his job so much - everyone was super nice.

September saw us in the home stretch. Katie was estimated to already be 8 pounds at her 38 week appointment - she's going to be a BIG baby! My family held a soon to be Katie party and I had a great shower at my office. Not to mention all of the folks who kept asking how much longer! Only a few weeks to go - I can't wait. This is me at about 37 weeks.
The big month is finally here! Katie can come any day now...but I have a feeling she'll be late. My best guess is October 21. But, I still haven't dialated at all and my blood pressure is increasing. The doctor may induce if it gets any worse. However, Todd has redone some of the flooring in the house, and the nursery is done. Don't you LOVE the ladybug theme? Hopefully Katie bug will love it too! My maternity leave starts on 10/12, unless she gets here sooner...I just can't wait to meet her.
She's here! Went to my doc appt on 10/23, and still no change. The doctor decided to send me to labor and delivery because my bp was elevated, but still the cervix was "unfavorable" (ie, there was no change to it). That meant a high likelyhood for a c-section, but we're going to try and go vaginal. So, we get to L&D about 3PM on Friday and they admit and decide to start the induction. They give me a cervix ripening agent and that sends me into labor. I dialate to 5 fairly quickly (by mid-morning Saturday) with no pain meds (um, yes, it HURTS). The doc then notices I'm slowing down and the baby's heart rate is dipping dramatically during contractions. They strongly recommed an epi to see if I can relax a bit (and hopefully Katie will tolerate contractions better). Unfortunately, that worked, but labor progress essentially stopped, so they started me on pitocin. Again, no more dialation and Katie's heart rate is dipping further with each contraction. The docs are afriad to up the pitocin because they don't think she'll tolerate the stronger contractions that are closer together. So, we have two choices, turn off the meds and get me out of labor (they had broken my water Saturday AM, and were now putting fluid back into my uterus) so Katie can rest, or do a c-section. It's now 10 pm and I am completely freaked out after listening to her heartbeat drop all day long. I am almost relieved to have the c-section. I am prepped and on the operating table by 10:15...Katie arrives at 10:35. It turned out it was a good call to have the c-section, the cord was around her neck and every time a contraction tried to push her down, the cord would pull her back. She did have a couple of minor complications from that, but nothing permanent. Katherine Joyce Benson arrived at 10:35pm on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 and was 19.25" long and 8 pounds 11 ounces! And, super cute, even if I do say so myself - she had the chubbiest cheeks I've ever seen (now, it's a couple of days later and the swelling has gone down, so I think the cheeks may have been some swelling from labor). Please enjoy Katie's pictures.
